Principles

How we choose to build — and how we choose to treat people.

The measure of a research team is not the brilliance of its papers but the integrity of its process.

CHIKARA is an ethical AI company by design, not by slogan. These principles govern product decisions, research, and how we relate to the communities we serve.

We must always be faithful

To the problem, to the user, and to what the evidence actually supports — not to what is convenient to claim.

We must always be considerate

Technology lands in real lives. We design for context, constraint, and dignity.

We must always be thoughtful

Speed without reflection produces harm. We pause where the stakes are high.

We must always be respectful

Of people, of cultures, of uncertainty, and of limits we have not yet solved.

We must be kind always

Kindness transforms transaction into relationship. Tools should reduce fear, not manufacture it.

We must always have manners

Courtesy is the currency of trust — in interfaces, in communications, and in research.

We must be grateful always

For users who trust us with their data and time, and for communities that teach us what we would otherwise miss.

We must always listen to others

Especially when the feedback is inconvenient. Listening is part of the engineering process.

We must never insult others

No product, paper, or campaign should demean the people it claims to serve.

We must be patient

Real constraints in Southern Africa do not yield to hype cycles. We build for the long path.

We must be understanding always

Of intermittent connectivity, limited devices, language diversity, and institutional reality.

We must care about others

Care is not a marketing theme. It is a design requirement: offline-first, privacy-first, triage-first where health is involved.

We must always be generous

With clarity, with documentation, and with tools that do not extract more than they give.

We must always be selfless

The product exists for the user. Our ambition is subordinate to their need.

We must reject all praise from men — for it will make you proud

External validation is not the measure. Integrity of process is. We would rather name what we have not solved than accept applause for claims we cannot defend.
